TATTOO APPOINTMENTS AND CONSULTS
MY APPOINTMENT IS COMING UP, WHERE IS MY SKETCH?
Totally fair question. Our artists have a heavy workload and all tattoos will be seen in person the day of your appointment. Enough time is always allotted during your appointment to make changes if necessary.
What is your deposit policy?
Deposits are payments made to secure your appointment time, artwork, and to let us know you’re serious about your tattoo. They are non-refundable and non-transferrable. In regards to cancelling or rescheduling an appointment, we prefer a week but require at least 48 hours notice. If you fail to give less than 48 hours notice, your deposit is forfeited and another deposit is required to schedule another appointment. We know certain circumstances do apply (we live in the snow lands) so please call us as soon as you know you will be late or won’t be able to make it. If you have rescheduled your appointment twice in a row, your deposit will be forfeited and another deposit is required to book an appointment. Your deposit does not purchase the artwork that you are commissioning your artist to prepare for your tattoo, and will not be released if your appointment is cancelled.
WHAT DOES ‘APPOINTMENT ONLY’ MEAN?
It’s exciting right? We totally feel your anticipation to get the process going, but due to our workload you must first have a consultation, then we book your appointment to get a tattoo. Depending on your artist, you might have a 2-6 month wait to start your project. If you are looking for a smaller tattoo from us and are hell-bent on skipping the wait, follow us on social media as we will be advertising any open spaces during the day.
HOW DO I SET UP A TATTOO APPOINTMENT?
All inquiries are made through a consultation application with either Rebeka or Ethan when their books are open. If their books are open you'll see it right on their pages and a link for a "consultation inquiry" will be on the page. From there, your artist will decide if Brass & Briar is this right fit for your project. As only two artists, we are not able to accept every inquiry we receive and must base our decisions off of the information you send us, so please be as thorough as possible! Include reference images and be as descriptive as you can (within reason). Once your project has been reviewed, you will be contacted by email with instruction on scheduling your consultation. If their books are closed please keep your eyes peeled on our social media for an announcement that they have opened.
CAN I JUST WALK IN/CALL TO TALK TO AN ARTIST AND SCHEDULE A CONSULTATION/APPOINTMENT?
By all means come in and see our space, we love visitors! Our office manager Caitlin is pretty fun, and may have a dad joke or two just for you. Our artists have a heavy workload and their time is scheduled accordingly to accommodate each client and focus on their experience. Each artist books in cycles that they announce on social media and their websites, so drop-in consults would interrupt our response to online inquires which are on a first-come, first-served basis. We would feel bad for those in line who are waiting so patiently.
SURPRISE, I'M COMING TO PORTLAND AND I REALLY WANT A TATTOO! I SEE MY ARTIST ISN'T BOOKING, WHAT CAN I DO? I NEEEEEEED IT.
Welcome to Portland! If your tattoo is on the small-ish side and your budget is flexible we *may* be able to accommodate you. This type of appointment requires a non-refundable sitting fee, and you must pay a deposit as well. The sitting fee does not come off the cost of your tattoo. Please email Caitlin our manager for more information and questions. THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT WE CAN MAKE YOU AN APPOINTMENT.
How much will my tattoo cost?
The cost of a tattoo has several factors including size, placement, amount of detail; we just can’t quote something like that online. If you have a strict budget you want to stick to for the piece please mention it in your inquiry.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING MY CONSULTATION?
You and your artist will discuss your tattoo in great detail. Prepare any reference photos, know the location of your tattoo, the size, style, budget, etc. You may show us images of other tattoos for inspiration, but please know that we will not replicate tattoos done by other artists. We also have a lot of books for you to check out if you’ve exhausted online options.
A consultation will not guarantee the artist you have chosen will take on your project. Each of our artists choose to focus on pieces that revolve around the subject matter and styles that they feel most comfortable with. If what you’re looking to do isn’t their cup of tea they may refer you to another artist. When both you and your artist agree to move forward with your project, a deposit minimum of $100 is made and your appointment(s) scheduled.
I DON'T LIVE NEAR PORTLAND, MAINE…CAN I STILL GET TATTOOED AT BRASS & BRIAR STUDIOS?
Though we prefer in-person consultations, we do offer remote consults under special circumstances. For new clients who are unable to make the trip just for a brief chat and size-up, the option of Skype or FaceTime is available if your artist thinks it is an option. Please apply for a consultation just the same from your artists page and we will handle it from there.
I want to get someone a tattoo as a gift, how do I do that?

Does it hurt?
Short answer? Yep. Each person has a unique level of pain tolerance and it also depends on the location you’re putting your new tattoo. Yes, it’s uncomfortable, but yes you can get through it. This is what you’ve been dreaming of after all, right?
I’m under 18 but my mom/dad said it was okay to get a tattoo and they can come with me. When can I schedule?
Thanks for the inquiry, you can come visit us when you are 18+ with a valid state ID or passport.
What forms of payment do you accept?
Cash is preffered but we also accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, JCB, UnionPay, Venmo and PayPal.
CAN I BRING A GUEST?
Absolutely, we love guests who are respectful of our space. We allow a maximum of two guests in the room with you at a time. All other guests may wait in our lounge, switch out with other guests, or explore the beautiful city of Portland! Our manager Caitlin is a wealth of local knowledge so feel free to ask for recommendations! Please keep in mind that this is our work space and though it can be fun and exciting to be chillin in the studio we are here doing our jobs. Please be mindful of volume as well as in and out traffic.
SPEAKING OF RECOMMENDATIONS, WHERE DO I PARK AND WHERE DO I STAY?
Parking is available all around the studio and there are a lot of options. If you have a long appointment (more than 4 hours) we suggest parking at Holiday Inn By The Bay. It's $12 and you can park there all day. If you have a shorter appointment there is ample metered parking on Spring Street. You have to pay every two hours M-Sa between 9am and 6pm. Sundays are free! There is also 1-2 hour parking on Park Street but you'll have to move your car depending on where you park. Godspeed.
As for accommodations AirBnB can offer some sweet deals with an authentic Portland experience or even fancy pants luxury condos. We also have an abundance of hotels! Holiday Inn By The Bay is super close and so is the Westin. The Portland Regency is pretty cool and has a killer basement lounge with fancy cocktails. Ask for the (free) pub snacks! We hope you enjoy your stay in Portland, it's a fun little city.
MAY I BRING MY KID WITH ME FOR THE APPOINTMENT/CONSULTATION?
We love kids, but there is no one under 18 allowed in our studio.
